El miro’s is an Amsterdam based graphic artist with his roots firmly grounded in graffiti culture. Now an established graphic designer, El Miro’s work is heavily represented in European snow/skate products.
Beeiing a fan of rap classics it was not hard to come up with an idea for the battle. I chose The Digital Underground because of the icon in it. If I only drew the nose it probably would be enough for the fans.

When we were children, my brother and I have been playing together all day long, every day . Playing meant creating, no matter what. I continued playing throughout my career training. De La Soul is definitely one of the greatest representative of the essence of 1990s old school hip hop. In the illustration we refer to a mythical theme that we are passionate about both their essence and their sound: a grill, a pool party, girls in roller skates, and much groove… so it’s “a roller skate party named saturdays”.

Being a huge HipHop fan since the first new-school era (1984-1985) way back in the days. The first thought that ran through my mind when I read ’90 hiphop Theme’ was the Native Tongues stepping to the scene in the early nineties, which lead me directly to A Tribe Called Quest (and others). The song I left my wallet in El Segundo inspired me to create this Latin-American themed typographic design.

While the rest of the rappers of the 90′s we’re busy runnin’ they mouth about shit they didn’t have, Jay kept low and made cold, calculated moves.
While the rest fed us fantasies, Jay told us grim tales of the misery, the regret and the pain one goes thru before finding success.
Jay’s masterpeices from the 90′s still represent the hustle that we – to this day – go through.
The Dead Presidents tee represents this hustle and the evil that we all chase after.

When I think of 90′s hip hop I think of rappers with a lot of over the top bling, cheesy over the top music videos with oiled up half naked women dancing in the background, and boom boxes. So I figured to go with a cartoon character listening to his headset would be a more suitable image to represent hip hop. I also added cassette tape in its mouth and making feed the music into the character.
I liked drawing the tongue in the design and adding a smiley face onto it, also done a dot like shading onto it which I don’t seem to do a lot in my designs seeing as its time consuming but it really gives it a nice shade effect, may have to try and do this more often.

Reality is what you make of it. Travel through your mind and see what your brain offers you to understand what heaven and hell is going on here. Take a Zeppelin ride to the Bavarian Brain sentineled by a metall owl. Smoke the house of and chill with saturn eye.

The design that I conjured up from my head is my very own version of a demon samurai mask, using a mixture of organic patterns and various shades of ink.
When trying to come up with a image for the word ‘surreal’ the first thing that popped into my head was samurai masks, I don’t know why I thought of that but figured I could create a mask version that resembles surrealism using only my intricate pattern style, in which I manage to make the image more of an illusion as well as a surreal influence.
Drawing the centre part of the drawing is what I enjoyed the most about this design, I always start from the centre and then gradually outwards of any design that involves mind bending patterns, cant explain why I do this but I feel more comfortable doing that technique.

Real life and everything that we are living is the most surreal that there may be, the situations we are going day by day defines us as individuals, the design has many elements that create an environment that defines the character of him and his experiences beliefs, elements that may seem to have nothing to do with each other, but they tell a story, a story as we all well kept in the subconscious and often is as surreal as life itself.

My name is Brian Bron, I’m from Manila, Philippines. I’m a self taught web designer and now currently working my ass in the field of illustration. Vector drawing became my main choice because I really loved the flexibility it gives in my art.
To tell you guys the truth, I really wasn’t aware on what cult movie was. I googled “cult movie” and it gave me a bunch of choices of which movies to choose from. When I saw the main character in “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”, I instantly new that he was the one I wanted to draw. Just added my vector style and voila!, my entry was born. This piece is based on my favourite scene from a Spike Lee’s masterpiece “Do the Right Thing” (1989). The movie is full of black humor, hip hip-influenced elements throughout the movie(Jordans, Nike Air Dunk, “Fight the power” by Public Enemy..etc) and unforgettable characters Spike Lee has created such as Buggin’ out, Mookie, Radio Raheem, and Coconut Sid.
In this scene, self centered character ‘Buggin’ Out’ shouts out “Hey, Sal, how come they ain’t no brothas on the wall?” when he saw no photo of African American on the wall in the Pizza joint owned by Italian American ‘Sal’ in the middle of Brooklyn. Tension between them eventually builds until it explodes into violence in the end. I love this particular scene’s ironical situation so I’ve added my own irony which is having the scene framed in a photo frame while he’s looking at the photo frames on the wall. So someone can ask me “Hey, Yuji, How come there ain’t no Asians in this illustration?”.
Cult movies have so many rich visual ideas to draw on so for this theme I wanted to do something with a lot of impact. Zombies have always been a cult movie classic so I focused on the zombie hand bursting out of the ground up the whole front of the shirt. Underneath the rotting and diseased looking hand the arm is adorned with the images and symbols of many cult movies and cult movie genres in a tattooed montage of cult movie goodness.

It’s always tricky when people ask “so what’s your cult movie”, I never know which one to pick up. But there’s one that I often think about, and that’s donnie darko, by richard kelly. That movie blew my mind, literally, the whole life path, the creepy rabbit ( but is he, really?), the writing, ….
So I’ve made an image about it, baring in mind those themes, trying to keep it as simple as I could, mysterious, like a dream about to vanish.

When I think of Funk. I think about funk music, soulful and energetic. I imagine dude with a big Afro wearing zoot suits performing long spontaneous solos with his instrument of choice, with the spot light illuminating him on stage.
So I decided to do an illustration of actually that. I did the illustration in Illustrator. Took some time to finish. Hope you guys and girls like it.
Representation rather than a genre, an era in music history, led by the father of Funk, Mr.James Brown with that sexy, smooth sound, full of melodies, beats, dance and passion for music and life. Ajua!

The opening season (Theme: 90′s Hip Hop) for Thieves & Honour was ongoing for a time period of 6 weeks. The structure was each standard battle would be on going for a period of 1 week, with a total of 4 standard battles. Followed by 2 consolation battles, where the 4 runner up designs from the standard battles would be matched up to go into a final round, the winners from the consolation battles would also be made into t-shirts.
After the initial season, each following season will follow the structure of 5 weeks. Week 1-2 will be the first standard battle, week 3-4 will be the second standard battle, and the 5th week will be the consolation battle for the two runner up designs from the standard battles. All winners will be made into t-shirts.
We source our t-shirts from AS Colour. The Men’s Staple Tee and the Women’s Wafer Tee.
